THE 3rd Chinese Medical Team (CMT) has provided free medical service to the people of Malaita Province over four days as part of the 41st Second Appointed Day Anniversary celebrations in the Malaita Provincial Capital last week.

At the invitation of the Malaita Provincial Government, the 3rd CMT from August 12 to August 15 offered free medical service to Auki residents as well as people from other parts of Malaita and visitors to the province who gathered in Auki for the Provincial Day celebrations.

A statement from the 3rd CMT said, it was the first time for the 3rd CMT to reach out to other islands in Solomon Islands since their arrival this March.

The medical services were provided in Auki town from August 13th to 15th by an eight-member team from CMT, including Dr Mu Mao (Team Leader and Infectious Diseases Expert), Dr Gary Xu (Acupuncturist), Dr Daniel Li (Acupuncturist), Dr Leon Zhong (Urologist), Dr Wei Bo (Cardiologist), Dr Jacob Tang (Nephrologist) and Bailey Huang(Interpreter)with assistance from the medical staff at Kilu’ufi Hospital.

“Throughout the free clinics, CMT doctors treated every single patient with warmth and expertise and over 400 consultations and treatments were given to local medical seekers with complimentary medications.”

The statement said the local community expressed great satisfaction and gratitude for the services provided and praised the CMT for extending their medical care to the grassroots level.

In the statement, the Director of Nursing at Kilu’ufi Hospital, Richard Maegerea expressed his appreciation after receiving acupuncture treatment, saying, “I am happy that I even can extend my shoulder beyond what I experienced previously. China Medical Team provides a number of specialized services which people are looking forward to.

“On behalf of the Provincial Health Service, I really appreciate your visiting us today and would like to recommend more medical services from CMT for the people of Malaita.”

The CMT statement said among the various services offered, the Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment acupuncture surprisingly emerged as the most popular medical service sought by the residents.

It said in Malaita Province, where many people work in gardens and suffer from long-term knee pain, backaches and headaches, acupuncture provided much-needed relief.

“They were informed that the CMT brought this treatment and were glad to have a try of this new and effective treatment for their conditions.

“They found the treatment to be effective and beneficial for their conditions and appreciated the medical services from CMT,” the statement added.

One of the residents from Auki town, Raina, who had a very severe backache, got relief and expressed her gratitude after receiving acupuncture treatment.

Raina also extended her thanks to the CMT, stating that, “With those few words, I wish to give a lot of thanks to the China Medical Team who have come around to join the Malaita Second Appointed Day, but then along the way, providing the service that is much needed in Auki.”

Looking ahead, the statement said CMT plans to extend medical services to even more grassroots communities in Solomon Islands to benefit more people who are in need.
