4th World Traditional Medicine Forum Successfully Held

The 4th World Traditional Medicine Forum, organized by the World Traditional Medicine Forum and co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), was held online on May 28 and 29, 2022 with great success.

Dr. Yemeng Chen, vice president of the Forum extended warm welcome to the delegates. Dr. Zsuzsanna Jakab, deputy director-general of the WHO, Mr. Wenming Yu, director general of China National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Dr. Arman Zargaran, Ministry of Health and Medical Education,Iran. Vice for International Affairs, Office of Persian and Complementary Medicines, Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Iran delivered video addresses at the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Chunbiao Guo, secretary general of the Forum and Hong Dong, treasurer of the Forum.

 

In her opening speech, Dr. Zsuzsanna Jakab highlighted the development direction laid out in the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023. She pointed out that the more than more countries recognize and fund traditional medicine research. About 80% of the world population use traditional medicine. 170 of the 194 WHO member states reported traditional medicine uses. On April 19, 2022, WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine was established in India. She hopes that the World Traditional Medicine Forum will continue uniting different organizations and serve as an effective platform to promote traditional medicine.

 

Mr. Wenming Yu pointed out that World Traditional Medicine Forum has successfully organized three forum conferences, providing a platform for promoting inheritance and innovation, development and application of traditional medicine, and exchange of different cultures. The 4th World Traditional Medicine Forum was organized in the background of international cooperation combating Covid-19 pandemic. With the theme of “Human health needs traditional medicine”, this Forum will further stimulate traditional medicine inheritance and innovation development and play an active role in promoting traditional medicine for human health protection. Still facing severe challenges of the pandemic, China wishes to continue to cooperate with the WHO and other countries to in the prevention, treatment, research, training, and regulation of traditional medicine to promote global public health governance and to build a community of human health, and to realize the vision of "Health for All".

 

Dr. Arman Zargaran stressed that there are many kinds of traditional medicine around the world, each of which can be very helpful to the existing medical system. He hopes we can have the opportunity to let these different types of traditional medicine cooperate and exchange with each other, especially in countries such as China, India, and Iran, where traditional medicine has always existed in traditional culture, traditional medicine should play more and more important role.


 
During the two-day conference, 28 experts and scholars from all over the world discussed and communicated on the three topics of "Clinical Application and Techniques", "Acupuncture and Moxibustion Clinical Treatments", and " TCM Treatment of Long-term Symptoms of COVID-19", and shared theories, clinical experience, and research results of traditional and complementary medicine in different countries. Through live broadcast platforms such as ZOOM, QH and Facebook, more than 14,000 traditional medicine professionals attended the conference online.

 

At the closing ceremony on May 29, DHO official Mr. Zhang Qi delivered a concluding speech. He said that this is the second time that WHO cooperated with the World Traditional Medicine Forum. The main objectives of this forum are consistent with the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023. Thousands of members from more than 50 countries attended the forum. 28 representatives of traditional medicine experts from 10 countries delivered speeches, representing different categories of traditional and complementary medicine, making the forum a significant progress in covering different categories of traditional and complementary medicine. He said that the "WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023" was discussed at the 75th WHO General Assembly in Geneva, and representatives of many countries expressed praise and support for the strategy report. WHO will also strengthen research and verification, and publish guidance documents on traditional medicine clinical research as soon as possible, He hoped that the World Traditional Medicine Forum will continue to cooperate with WHO and support each other in the future.

 


Dr. Ramon Calduch, vice president of the World Traditional Medicine Forum, delivered a closing speech. He said that the promotion and development of traditional medicine is still a long-term and important task. Let us work together to continue to respect tradition and continue to innovate, so that traditional medicine can continue to serve mankind in the new century.

 

Chunbiao Guo, Secretary General of the World Traditional Medicine Forum, announced the successful conclusion of the 4th World Traditional Medicine Forum and look forward to meeting our fellow representatives from all over the world in Malaysia next May!
