India's capital New Delhi is bracing for the annual pollution season to begin.
As fall ends and the temperature begins to slowly drop, the pollution across North India rapidly starts to rise every year.
For the past few years, winter has seen New Delhi enveloped in a thick smog that pours in from burning crop fields, factories chugging out toxins, and smoke from firecrackers set off in anticipation of India’s annual festival of Diwali.
The city has been ranked the most polluted in the world, and the air quality last year reached levels more than 20 times World Health Organization (WHO) "safe" guidelines. Last year, authorities also declared a public health emergency for the city.
When the air quality worsens the smog becomes visible and the thick haze irritates eyes and throats, an ashy taste is constantly on your lips.
Those suffering from asthma and other respiratory illnesses often report complications.
Double health threat: This year, the unease in breathing is exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.
For months, we have been sequestered in our homes and venture out reluctantly with a palpable fear of testing positive and having to battle with a broken healthcare system.
India reported 63,371 new Covid-19 cases and 895 deaths on Friday, with the nationwide number of infections more than 7.3 million -- the second most cases globally behind the United States.
With hospital beds already in short supply and consultations with doctors largely limited to video calls, someone suffering from breathing issues due to pollution may have nowhere to turn to now.
Like clockwork, every year in October I clean my air purifier and begin shuttering the doors and windows in my home to keep out the pollution. It's an action which will restrict the little fresh air I am able to breathe during a self-imposed lockdown.
But for thousands of people who have existing respiratory illnesses, Covid-19 has come with an extra layer of fear that their lungs may not survive both -- the air pollution and the damage the disease brings with it.
Survival mode: As authorities across multiple states scramble to reduce the smoke, we settle into a pattern of survival until the first rain at the end of the winter season clears the skies and we take off the masks that were protecting us from the pollution.
This time it will be different. We were wearing masks before the pollution season began and will continue to do so long after it's over.

Germany has recorded another daily high in new coronavirus infections, according to the country’s center for disease control, the Robert Koch Institute.
The country reported 7,334 new infections in 24 hours, about 700 more than the previous day, when 6,638 cases were recorded.
There were 24 new deaths on Thursday, bringing the total number of virus-related fatalities in Germany to 9,734.
In another worrying sign for the European country, the number of patients requiring intensive medical care is also on the rise.
On Thursday, 655 patients were in ICUs with 329 patients requiring a ventilator, official data showed. A week earlier, 487 were in intensive care.
It comes as countries across Europe are tightening restrictions following a surge in Covid-19 case numbers.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday that tighter restrictions will be imposed in coronavirus hotspots, saying she felt "uneasy" about the "exponential growth" in the country's coronavirus cases.
The World Health Organization's technical lead for coronavirus, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, said on Thursday that, "About 80% of countries across the European regions are seeing a growth" in Covid-19 cases.
"We are certainly seeing a very concerning situation across Europe, where we're seeing a resurgence. We're seeing an increase in transmission in a large number of countries across the region," Van Kerkhove told CNN's Alisyn Camerota.

The Czech Republic has recorded 9,721 new coronavirus cases in its highest one-day increase since the pandemic began.
According to the latest figures from the country’s Health Ministry, at least 149,010 cases have now been recorded nationwide.
The number of new infections has been rapidly rising in the country. Friday is the second day in a row that the Czech Republic reported its highest increase in infections.
There have been at least 1,230 deaths from the virus in the country.

The record-setting coronavirus infection numbers in Europe this week may not bode well for U.S. travelers hoping to return to the continent anytime soon.
In just the past 10 days, Europe has recorded an exponential increase in infections, with a million new cases, The Washington Post reported. The continent has been nearly free of U.S. tourists since March 17, when the European Union restricted nonessential travel and closed its external borders. On July 1, the European Union began to allow travelers from some countries back in, but not those from the United States. While there are some exceptions — including Croatia, the United Kingdom and Turkey — most of Europe probably will not open its borders to leisure travelers from the United States as the outbreak remains uncertain on both sides of the pond.
“Country after country is just declaring their highest ever [coronavirus] numbers since the pandemic began,” says Adrian Hyzler, the chief medical officer of Healix International, a company that specializes in international security, medical and travel-assistance services. “Europe is just so preoccupied with trying to suppress this surge.”

For the first time since late July, the tally of newly reported coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed 64,000 on Thursday. In 44 states and the District of Columbia, caseloads are higher than they were one month ago, and many of the new infections are being reported in rural areas with limited hospital capacity.
More than 7,944,000 cases have been reported nationwide since February, and at least 216,000 people in the United States have died of covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.

It was supposed to be a two-week trip to New Zealand – just 14 days away from Australia for a holiday.
Today, seven months after Deccy Ledezma and her daughter Bledys Tunon left this country, they finally came home.
The duo arrived at Sydney airport in the first flight of Australia and New Zealand’s new quarantine-free “bubble” travel arrangement.
Qantas will operate two flights a week from New Zealand, with hundreds of passengers still due to each day.
“We’ve been overseas in New Zealand for seven months – we thought we’d never make it back, oh my God!” Derccy Ledezma said, fighting back tears.
“Thankfully, we don’t need to quarantine. It’s just so good to be back.”
Derccy’s husband, Neil, said he had been counting down the days until he could finally see his family again.
“Two hundred and seven nights, that’s how long they were gone. They’d only gone for two weeks, and then got stuck.”
It was a day of high emotion at the international terminal as stories of reunited families echoed in its empty halls. Hundreds of arriving passengers were relieved to be able to come home and not have to enter hotel quarantine for two weeks.
Most of the passengers were returning family members, with the airport once again hosting scenes of unbridled joy.
Juliet Robertson held her daughter tightly, tears welling up, as she told reporters how she was feeling. “Ecstatic, euphoric. I miss her so much.”
She said she jumped at the opportunity to return to Australia and was hoping to head to Canberra next, to see her sick sister.
“It was like a miracle when they opened the borders here, because now I don’t have to quarantine, I can go and see her straight away.”
Caitlyn Hosking was there with an old friend to surprise her mother Jodie, whom she hadn’t seen in months. They held each other for minutes, wiping tears away and laughing together again.
“The flight was packed, there were around 250 people on there,” Jodie said. “Everybody was on their best behaviour, it was a bit like being in school\ – everyone is sitting there in their masks, making sure they have the correct bits of paper.”
Asked how she felt seeing her daughter and friend once again, Jodie beamed. “It’s amazing, they look gorgeous!”
The New South Wales tourism minister, Stuart Ayres, was on hand to welcome the passengers and and drew a cinematic comparison.
“It’s been quite an emotional day, like living in a scene from the movie Love Actually.”
Ayres said the day was an important moment in the country’s battle against Covid-19. “We want to make sure that we can keep making strong progress in opening our borders where it’s safe to do so.”
Three flights from New Zealand were arriving at Sydney airport throughout the day, bringing hundreds of passengers.
The arrangement so far only allows one-way flights from New Zealand to NSW, with Australians not permitted to travel in the other direction.
Ayres said any changes to that would have to come at the New Zealand government’s discretion, and possibly after the election this weekend.
“We’d love to see that happen as soon as possible.”
